Building the Heritage district
Between 2025 and 2027 a series of cultural facilities will rise up across a 150-acre site adjoining the Newton Enslaved Burial Ground.
Undergirded by significant support from the government of Barbados, the Heritage District will fast become the hub of multiple globally significant institutions, pioneering advances in archival preservation and interpretation, staging and hosting major performing arts events, safeguarding tens of millions of pages of records documenting the development of Trans-Atlantic slave societies, pursuing genealogical research in partnership with scholars around the world, and welcoming people of all beliefs to a progressive Spirituality Centre. Under the design direction of Adjaye Associates, the Barbados Heritage District will join with dozens other cultural districts globally to share the heritage of Barbados and host cultural offerings of all kinds for the benefit of Barbadians.
